History of Thihagoda Divisional Secretariat

The history of this division runs up to pre historic era. That mean the time of before the arrival of Aryan. History evidences that there were people who belong to Naga clan. The village Navimana is considered as a village that Naga people lived. As this clan had names such as Na Ibala, Na Bugala with prefix “Na”, some believe the names of Naimbala, Nadugala made from that.

However, there were not any historical details on this area upto 16th century. According to Poojawaliya, in 65 BC King Dapulusen who governed Anuradhapura decamped to Dondara after fighting with Dravidians. Then came to a ancient temple at Kanahalawaththa not far away from Thihagoda, by Kottewaththa road by there.

The king stayed at several villages on this journey. The village adieu King is Asaragoda (Pethangahawaththa) the place where King removed jewels before enter the temple called as Komangoda (Komangoda) the place where the King clad jewels called as Palandagoda (Weladagoda). Still these villages have the same names. The names of Medaviyangoda and Bisopaththuwa also reveals by ancient annals. The place where king’s garden was named as Uyangoda and princess’ bathing place called as Bisopaththuwa.

After 16th century, in Portuguese time, Portuguese General named Darpan built a defence castle close to Yatiyana. In Dutch administrative period, there was a camp in Batuvita. Even today, this place is identified as Dutch Camp. Dutch rulers also built a church in Thihagoda and the school now call as Thihagoda Primary also built by Dutch. In 1796 when our country’s administrative power transfer from Dutch to British people British Governor paid special attention on Thihagoda.

Metland reports shows that British rulers suspect the connection of Venerable  Bowela Dhammananda of Pethangahawaththa Vihara and Mudaliars. There are ancient temples built in historical eras. Temples like Watagedara, Pethangahawaththa, Kapudoowa and Peththare built in Dutch period.

When we look at the administrative structure of the division, Matara district was a sub agent division which responsible for Provincial Agent. At that time the district divided into five divisions. Gangabada Paththuwa North was one of it. The last Mudali of Matara district also governed Gangabada Paththuwa division. With the changes of administrative structure Matara district divided into 11 revenue divisions in 1970. At that time, Gangabada Paththuwa North again divided into Gangabada Paththuwa North and South. Thihagoda divisional secretariat known as Gangabada Paththuwa South.  It consisted with 13 Grama Niladari divisions at that time. In 1987, number of grama niladari divisions increased for easiness of administration. So Thihagoda became 40 Grama Niladari domains.
